What do you think the boys held onto in their minds that made it worth it to live and persevere?
My response to this question is Family and Friends. I believe that the boys hope of seeing their families again was their main motivation of dealing with the struggles they are going through. The Authors never tells you that they believe their family is gone, they just always question if they are okay or if they will ever see them again. I also believe that watching other people outside of their family who was also trying to survive on the journey with them, gave the boys a sense of determination to keep fighting and to never give up no matter how hard the struggle gets. The other people they traveled with also encourage the boys to keep going, which gave them the power to proceed.
I like that you pointed out that the boys never believe that their family is dead. I think that is very interesting and seems to be a common thread in everyone's response.
