Take The Cannoli

Question: On more than one occasion, Vowell brings up that doom can bring people together. Is something that is so negative able to bring people together in a positive way?

Response: In the text Sarah Vowell says "When the plane is going down, you suddenly feel the urge to hug that smelly, snoring person next to you." I do think that in a way, doom can definitely bring people together in a positive way. I know, from personal experience, that if put in a life or death situation, I would confide in the person closest to me. Last year during Black Friday, there was a shot that went off right in front of the store that I was in (Forever 21, to be exact). Almost immediately, everyone was looking for someone to confide in. I grabbed the person closest to me, and headed towards the back exit. It's not so much about who the person is, but for me, it was about finding that last piece of comfort. I very well could have been the next victim. The person I was holding onto could have been the next victim. We held onto each other, like we'd known each other our whole lives. We took each other under both of our wings. It's kind of weird how something like doom, can conjoin people in such positive ways.

  1. WOW! Diana thats really scary, but on the bright side you are okay. I totally agree with you that doom can bring people together, but did you ever think that sometimes its a little to late to become close with someone?
