What do you think the boys held onto in their minds that made it worth it to live and perservere?
A: The boys held onto the memory of their family and they used the hope that they would get to a better place. Benson's father had given him a pair or red shorts with blue stripes down the side, which he cherished. Even though they were infested with lice, he held onto them. At the camp, he was trying to heat them by the fire and it burned a hole in them. Benson was so determined to keep his shorts that he found cloth and a makeshift needle and he patched up the whole. This speaks to how desperate Benson was to hold onto his family, and the length he would go to save it. They also realized that the boys around them needed their help, and they used their friends and family who still survived around them to continue on in their journey.
The boys also had to do a lot of letting go. They had to let go of physically being with their family, and they had to let go of the people who fell down and dies on the long journey.
They also had to be open to what came next in order to continue walking into the unknown.
A very well thought out and thorough answer. Good job! Great description of how they had to let go in order to move forward.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used Benson's red shorts as one of the things that kept him from not letting go because i never noticed how he kept onto them because i feel if he would of taken them or left them behind i would believe that he wouldn't think his parents are still alive. The shorts give him hope.
